The maps behind me identify the first ever protected districts for Brazil Nut harvesting in the Amazon forest. And that’s my brother Aaron who invited me to Madre de Dios, Peru to join him on one of his environmental trips. Aaron does mapping on the ground long with photography under the cloud cover from a Cessna and by satellite mapping (GSI). The project aims to help protect the world’s greatest rain forest, especially an area now threatened by a huge highway being paved through the forest to the Pacific Ocean. Okay, roads are good, but with roads come more deforestation, more slash-and-burn plantations, destructive secondary roads, and disruption of local life through immigration, mining, ranching, and logging. The realists among you will not be surprises that some roads are created for nothing but profitable purposes regardless of the cost to local life (people, plants, animals).

The stations we visited, run by the Amazon Conservation Association, fight to preserve some areas of the forest. One of their first areas was a Brazil nut concession in the Castana Corrido. It sustains 420 families and I got to meet some of them. The Brazil nut industry is important because it is a sustainable industry (existing naturally in a healthy rain forest).

The USAID under the Bush Administration says that first comes economic growth (which may reduce poverty), first comes their “macroeconomic framework” (and sustainability may follow). The USAID says that regulations discourage employment and inhibit firms from high productivity.

It seemed to me the people on the ground were saying reducing poverty should be top of the list, not a maybe outcome. They were saying companies have to be regulated first, because they don’t care, and people regulated least of all. Shouldn’t sustainability come first and profits second? I think so. These are the two different ways of looking at the issue. I came away not liking USAID’s “The Goal is Growth” slogan. It should be about people first. But, still, everyone I met was full of hope.

Here I’m on millions of Brazil nuts. Yes, they come in shells not how they look in bags of Trail Mix.

You can seem more about the Amazon Conservation Associations. They are working to get producers a higher price for their product and to win the first sustainable certification for a forest product in Peru. They are an amazing group of people. I’ll just leave this little lecture with one of their forest posters.

And I have to add one final picture from Machu Pichuu in Peru (taken by my friend Pablo Corral) where I hiked the Inca Trail and looked down on Machu Pichuu it in the early morning. Now that will take your breath away!

Первый акт начинается со сцены, в которой Эхо в обычной одежде ухаживает за девушкой-алкоголичкой Даникой в больнице. И вселяет в нее надежду на новую жизнь.

Потом мы видим, как она в вечернем туалете амурничает с богачом Ричардом на свадьбе (сцена из ролика)

Потом она, вся из себя крутая, говорит по-испански с криминальными типами (сцена из ролика)

Адель ДеВитт разговаривает с миллионером Марком Дрейфусом, обещает, что выбранная им девушка в него влюбится (сцена из ролика). Она обещает ему, что никто не будет следить за ним во время общения с Куклой (она называет их Actives - активированные?). "Мы даем вам не то, что вам хочется, а то, что вам нужно" )))

Второй акт: камера прогуливается по Домику, в кадре мелькает доктор Клэр Сондерс, в сценарии подчеркивается, что мы пока не видим ее лица.

Агент ФБР Пол Баллард встречается с осведомителем Кином, который говорит, что Кукольный домик - это городская легенда. Выясняется, что Пол давно ведет это дело, но никто в него не верит.

В Домике Эхо, Сиерра и и еще один "Кукл", Виктор, садятся вместе за обеденный стол. Мы узнаем в Викторе осведомителя Кина.

Компьютерщик Тофер говорит охраннику Бойду, что эта троица уже третий раз за последнюю неделю садится вместе за один стол. "Это глубже, чем память, это инстинкт выживания".

Разговор переходит на доктора Сондерс, которую здесь прозвали Призраком. Оказывается, она настояла на том, чтобы в перерывах между обычными заданиями Куклы занимались добрыми делами - как помощь девушке-алкоголичке в больнице.

Тофер упоминает, что все Куклы - добровольцы. Бойд в этом не уверен (из ролика). Тофер говорит, что все люди запрограммированы: "Ты носишь галстук на работу, потому что так полагается. Ты ешь яйца на завтрак, но не на ужин. Ты восторгаешься, когда богачи, с которыми ты не знаком, загоняют мяч в ворота..."

Они все-таки решают не говорит начальству о кучкующейся троице.

В квартиру Пола кто-то подбрасывает фото Эхо с подписью "Кэролайн". Он прогоняет фото через дазу данных ФБР. Информация об этом тотчас же доходит до начальницы домика Алисии Де Витт. "Это эпически неприемлемо".

Алисия задает Эхо новую программу и через Виктора-Кина подстраивает так, чтобы Эхо и Пол встретились в подвале сгоревшего дома.

Третий акт. Эхо и Пол встречаются (отрывок, который мы видели). Она говорит, что ищет пропавшую сестру. Он обещает ей помочь, ведет к себе домой.

В Домике Тофер пытается посмотреть досье Эхо. Его застает врасплох доктор Сондерс. Впервые мы видим ее лицо и понимаем, почему у нее прозвище "Призрак" - ее лицо изуродовано шрамами от ножа или бритвы.

В квартире Пола Эхо убеждает его показать ей материалы, которые у него есть. Он вроде бы верит ей, но в последний момент хватает ее за горло и приставляет пистолет к виску. "Кто говорит мне то, что я хочу слышать? Кто дает то, что мне нужно? Никто. Вот я и подумал, что ты - никто." Наша девушка, естественно, отбирает у него пистолет: "Я не никто" (из ролика). - "Ты - Кэролайн?" Она вздрагивает, у нее потерянный вид. Она дважды стреляет в Пола.

Четвертый акт. Тофер и Бойд, дежурящие внизу в миниване, слышат выстрелы, бегут в квартиру Пола, уводят Эхо за секунду до прибытия полиции. Бойд связывается с начальством по телефону, выясняется, что Эхо только ранила Пола. Его доставили в ту самую больницу, где Эхо ухаживает за Даникой. Эхо, не слушая Тофера и Бойда, ловит машину и едет в больницу, чтобы добить Пола. Выясняется, что ни Тофер, ни Бойд не знали, что у Эхо задание убить Пола.

В Домике Адель раговаривает по телефону, говорит, что это было ее решение. На том конце трубки ей велят трубить отбой. Она дает отмашку Тоферу и Бойду, они уводят Эхо. Бойд в ярости: "Не сообщить мне, что у нее задание убить - это ужасная беспечность!" Тофер: "Расслабься, мы живем в кукольном домике, значит мы тоже куклы. Дети любят ломать куклы".

Адель устраивает им нагоняй: "Она стреляла в упор, но врачи говорят, что через неделю он выйдет из больницы. Как это возможно?" Тофер: "Я дал ей все нужные навыки. Она знала куда стрелять". Адель: "Или куда не стрелять".

Эхо ложится в свою постель-гробик и перед тем как уснуть происносит имя: "Кэролайн".

...некто утверждает, что уже видел пилот, и делится с общественностью впечатлениями. насколько утверждение достоверно – вопрос, но в тексте есть информация, которую следует рассматривать, как спойлеры. посему будьте внимательны и хорошенько подумайте, хотите ли вы это читать.

Well, I don't know if it's finished yet or not - stuff might get tweaked - but I had a sneak peak of the Dollhouse opener. It's titled "Echo" and is written and directed by some guy claiming to be called Joss Whedon. This is my own little review, with some new pictures.

First off - this is going to be the most bias review ever, since it's on a fan site for something which hasn't even made it to air yet, right? Well, maybe. I want to go into this one saying from the start, I don't like everything Joss Whedon has done. I don't think he's a God. I didn't think the original pilot of Firefly was a very good episode to hook people in with. And yes, I'm not even a FOX exec of yester year. Stop throwing things at me. Seriously. I'm not being mean (well, much) - I'm trying to be honest. I've always said, if I don't like Dollhouse, I'll hand this fan site over to somebody who does. So, trust me, nobody was more nervous about looking at this thing than me.

So, let's get to business. Is Dollhouse any good? Yes. As a stand alone show, it's a new and thoughtful musing on what being human means. It also features Eliza and Dichen, who are both pretty, pretty people (and I'm clearly very vain). If you don't know the premise of Dollhouse, I'll give you a short overview: 'Dolls'. 'In a house'. 'Puppetmasters send them on missions'. 'They're hired'. It's a bit more complex, but I don't want to spoil anything.

If you're expecting it be just like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, or Angel, or Firefly - forget about it. I don't think every Buffy/Angel/Firefly fan will love this, the same way not all Buffy fans liked Firefly. Dollhouse is different to anything Joss Whedon has done before (much like Firefly was different to Buffy - you get the picture). That isn't to say elements of his previous shows aren't present - I gasped towards the end of the episode a few times, for example - but the premise on display here is different, and so is the execution. There's trademarked Whedon wit sprinked along proceedings - but less so than your average episode of Buffy. There's some serious musings going on, although it's reserved for the back half of the episode.

Whilst the core message of Buffy was clearly female (and - yes, to some extent male) empowerment, the message here is somewhat more murky. Yes, the concept makes me squick still slightly. I saw consulting producer Tim Minear ask online recently if people would be less squicked if they knew the dolls can be both male and female, and my answer is this: nope, still a bit squicked. It's not about being male or female - it's about the idea of human trafficking. The show clearly has this undercurrent on purpose, and to it's defense it doesn't appear to be trying to condone what is happening. Also, if you think you're going to feel punched in the face all episode with squick (yes, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, I'm looking at you), you're wrong - being a Doll can actually be a good thing, too. And the show has a river of fun flowing through it, too.

Almost every character (outside of the Dolls) on display had moments which made me think 'Wow, they're dicks', closely followed by '...But I kind of love them'. An interesting example is Topher, who's phrases have prompted me to sit and ponder how often I say certain things online and how I behave, crossed with a streak of my best friend Kirsty's justifications for her actions. Or in other words - he's funny, interesting, selfish and entirely too human. What he's doing, when you think about it - and the episode forces you to do just that - is worrying. Possibly even horrifying - but he sees the world from his point of view, and can even justify that. There's a price for what he's doing, and I can't help think there's a bit of arc setting up for his character in this episode. I wanted to hate his character, as I hate myself and he's the closest thing I've seen to me on TV - but I couldn't. Yep. It's a Whedon show.

Particular point of reference: FBI Agent Paul is a great character (and I can't think of better casting than Tahmoh Penikett). It's also worth keeping an eye on Dollhouse boss Adelle, and 'handler' Boyd, both of whom leap off the page to particular effect.

So, what doesn't work? I'm not sure I understand how it works on a weekly basis particularly well. Episode two is going to be important here. If people are tuning in to not engage their brains at all, I'm not convinced they will follow what's happening, as the opening 10 minutes are all over the place. The first 10 minutes, in fact, pull you through so much material and situations it's difficult to identify exactly who (or what) we're supposed to be watching for - which, in a way, is probably the point. It is well written, though. And that is, ultimately, about as flawed as it gets, I think. It's clear right from the beginning you're not going to be watching Every Other Show on your telebox. Goodbye, Gil Grissom - welcome to the Dollverse.

What follows is an introduction to The Dollhouse locations, followed by a look at how the Dollhouse works on a day to day basis, and the day to day staff running it, along with meeting a few of the Dolls in the house. One point here - we barely see the other regular Dolls in this episode. It's a shame, but it just leaves more characters for later episodes. One thing which hasn't been covered elsewhere yet - there are Dolls in this here house - or more specifically, lots of them. If you don't find a character to love straight away, don't worry about it.

And as for the Dollhouse - it looks beautiful. I want set designer Stuart Blatt to come and redesign my flat. And my work. And... You get the picture. And if you don't, here's an actual picture:

When I first heard of Dollhouse, I pictured it being some kind of Matrixesque underground facility. Or ultimate blandness. Not so - I'd love to live in this place. It's also very big. I don't know how much time the producers plan to spend inside the Dollhouse in each episode, but they could quite easily spend an entire episode not leaving the thing. In fact, they could shoot it all as a one shot. The One Where Adelle Breaks A Nail And Has Revenge.

So, spoilers! What are the reveals we hadn't known about, who are the characters we hadn't heard about who inhabit the world, and what are the core locations? What clear mythology elements are set up? I'm not saying. That's the show's job. What I will say is there's more going on that we all knew, and there's other people in this show we're all gonna be meeting.

A fandom aside: I predict Dollhouse will be fanfic central. The premise is so wide yet there's clearly defined parameters going on at the same time (read: it's a rich world to draw from), this is going to generate a huge amount of fic. And probably specs. Seriously. If you want a show where your characters can do anything, this is it.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited am I? 8. It's a solid opener. There's an awful lot of set up to get through in the episode, so I'm keen to see how it works week to week. I get the feeling there's huge potential for fun in this series which people aren't yet aware of -- and heartbreak people aren't expecting. "Echo" really sets up a slow brewing storm, and how these characters react is the thing which interests me. They can be brilliant, or they may be terrible. Or both. When the shit starts to hit the fan in Dollhouse, the situation will be... Fluid.

Is it January yet?

Whedon, creator/producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, will return to series television with the show Dollhouse. However, Fox won’t debut the show until early next year. Dollhouse reunites Whedon with Eliza Dushku, who kicked butt and cracked heads as Faith on both Buffy and Angel.

She stars in Dollhouse as Echo, an "Active" who lives in a top-secret, for-profit, majorly illegal facility called the Dollhouse, where the Actives are assigned all manner of missions, and with each mission they’re reprogrammed, with earlier memories wiped out and replaced by the information necessary to carry out the latest job. So, for example, Echo might be someone’s dream date on one mission and an assassin the next. Crises arise, though, when Echo begins to retain memories from past assignments and to question who she really is.

Co-stars on the series will include Olivia Williams, Fran Kranz, Enver Gjokaj, Dichen Lachman, Harry Lennix and two genre favorites: Angel veteran Amy Acker and Tahmoh Penikett of Battlestar Galactica. SCI FI Weekly recently caught up with Whedon in New York City, and he excitedly offered a preview of things to come on Dollhouse.

How ready were you to jump into another TV show?

Whedon: I guess I was totally ready. I just had no idea it was going to happen. It literally did happen after lunch with Eliza, which is a tale that sounds like a bad biopic but is actually true. I went home and said to my wife, "Honey, I accidentally created a Fox show." And she just said, "Fine." She knew it was right, that this was very organic, and the timing was right. I’d been aware a while. I’d mourned for my last show [Firefly]. I’d been working in movies and then not working in movies for a while. And then it’s just all flowed so naturally that even though I didn’t know I was ready, I was clearly ready.

What will we see on a weekly basis?

Whedon: On a weekly basis we will see Eliza as a different person. On a weekly basis she’ll have a different engagement every week, and she’ll have a different purpose and a different personality. The exciting thing and part of the other reason I created the show is that Eliza is very versatile, and this will be a chance for her to play 100 different people. They’ll all be her. She’s not going to wear old-person makeup or anything like that, but they’ll all be from very different social strata, with very different agendas and very different motivations and very different things. Every week she’ll have an agenda that’s evil or decent or sexual or romantic or altruistic. It can be anything. But there will be a flow-through of the show as well, about her and the characters surrounding her and how the Dollhouse works, how it doesn’t work, and her burgeoning self-awareness. Between these engagements she’s this complete innocent and starts to go, "Hey, here I am in the Garden of Eden. What’s this apple, and what do I do with it?"

Will any of the Buffy/Angel/Firefly team be coming back as writers, producers and directors?

Whedon: Oh yes, absolutely. Liz Craft and Sarah Fain are my co-execs, and I targeted them before Women’s Murder Club went up, and then it went up and I couldn’t get them. When the strike was over, we’d picketed together the whole strike. And then the next day they were off Women’s Murder Club and I, like a vulture, like a panther, picked them out. So they’re my co-execs and running the show with me. And then I have Tim Minear and Steve DeKnight as consulting producers, which is an embarrassment of riches. And then everybody else we hired is sort of a younger writer, baby writers, and they’re all really smart. It’s a great a room, a great room.

Who is Amy Acker going to play?

Whedon: Amy plays Dr. Claire Saunders. She works in the Dollhouse and she’s a very moral force. She’s very, very, very broken. She’s scarred, literally scarred. Something happened at the Dollhouse a while back, and she was scarred. She just sort of lives there, and her whole mission in life is to take care of them. Topher, the programmer, who is going to be cute and funny and sexy, he programs them, and he has a very amoral kind of point of view, and she is sort of his counterpoint.

Who is Echo actually working for?

Whedon: The idea was, "Eliza can do a lot of things, so let’s have her do a lot of things." The way that works is to have a very varied clientele. Obviously, since it’s an underground operation and very expensive and very illegal, some of them are shifty and a lot of them are rich. That sort helps keep it varied and fun and glamorous, but I also establish in the pilot that they do what they refer to as "pro bonos," which are just things where they help people [for free], because they discover that even though they don’t remember any of it, it helps them physically that they do these things.

So there’s a physical benefit to them doing good?

Whedon: Yes, and there’s an argument about it. There’s an argument about everything, even in the first episode.

People will compare this show to loads of other things...

Whedon: People would come to me with "It’s just like... It’s just like... It’s just like..." I always feel a little guilty, if you have enough of those, I feel that’s what makes it original. Eternal Sunshine is one of those things we all went, "Oh yeah, of course." Eternal Sunshine. Never Let Me Go, that novel. Actually, it was Tahmoh who pointed that out to me. Tahmoh Penikett, when I first got on the phone with him, he said, "Have you read this book...?" And I went, "Oh my God, I have." And, yes, I think I’m stealing from it.

You’re going to get a lot of Eternal Sunshine comparisons...

Whedon: Eternal Sunshine, it’s that same sort of idea of "What about our relationships is real, and what is just what we’re projecting?" And that’s really... this whole [thing] revolves around the idea of what we expect from each other, what we believe about ourselves, and how all of that can be torn apart, and how you can build, from scratch, your own identity. So it’s very dark and very morally gray.

Would you say that Dollhouse is darker than your other shows?

Whedon: Dark in a different way, I’d say. It’s gray, dark gray. It doesn’t all take place at night, I’m very happy to say, because that’s horrible to shoot. But everybody in it is compromised, to a very large extent, and yet I love every character and I’m fascinated by them, as always happens. And the actors we have playing them are phenomenal. So we know that we can take any character, put them through the wringer, find the hope or lose hope, really break them down and then build them up again, which, ultimately, is sort of the whole point of all the dramas I do.

Eliza was pretty dark on Buffy and Angel, and here...

Whedon: She’s a complete innocent as Echo, but what’s interesting to me is, as she begins to build a character as Echo, one of the things that Echo is going to have to learn how to do is [be] evil. Part of becoming human is layering on something that is bad. So, that to me... somebody described it as the serpent in the Garden of Eden, and I thought, "Yeah, that’s her, too."

People are also wondering who the Actives are working for, where the money goes, if they’re assassins...

Whedon: People thought it’s like an Alias thing, and the two things we’ve had to [clarify] is that, one, she’s not toting a gun every week. That’s not what it’s about. It’s a human drama with some action and all the suspense because, as she becomes self-aware, the Dollhouse becomes kind of a dangerous place for her. So there’s always that friction. But it could be a romantic comedy one week. Eliza jokes that this a cure for her ADHD, and I say it’s a cure for mine.

During the writers’ strike you shot Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, an online musical that stars Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion. What can you tell us about that, and what’s currently happening with it?

Whedon: Dr. Horrible we’re just finishing. We’re going to finishing posting it, and then we’re going to have a whole conversation about how to put it out there. I’m going to put it on the Internet first. Whether or not I can monetize it that way... I’d like to be able to. I’d like to be able to make the money back, pay the crew, because Dr. Horrible, apart from being hilarious and fun, is also a product of the strike. I want to show that there’s a way to make things yourself, but then I also want to show that there’s a way to make that viable for people. So even if I don’t accomplish the second part, I want to do the first part. So we’ll put it on the Internet, hopefully with a sponsor of some kind. We’ll work that out. And then iTunes, DVD... we’re doing amazing DVD extras. It’s going to be the finest 40-minute musical since the last one I made.

Joss Whedon: Inside Dollhouse
The Buffy / Firefly creator talks about his new series.

US, May 27, 2008 - At FOX's recent Upfront event in New York, we had the chance to speak to Joss Whedon about his upcoming highly anticipated TV series, Dollhouse. The show stars Eliza Dushku as Echo, one of a group of "Dolls" or "Actives," a highly illegal and underground group who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Whedon came up with the idea for the show while having lunch with Dushku, which was one of the first topics he discussed during our conversation.

Whedon also talked more about what the Dolls do; where the show might go, and working with Dushku and Dollhouse stars Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica) and Amy Acker (Angel). We also chatted about Dollhouse debuting midseason next January, where it will be paired with 24, and how it is part of a new FOX campaign -- along with J.J. Abrams Fringe -- called "Remote-Free TV", which will find the show airing with far less commercials than a typical network series.

Question: Is it accurate to say Eliza convinced you to come back to TV?

Whedon: Well, when we had lunch she was asking "Who should I talk to? Where is it safe? How can I make sure I'm protected and make quality television that deals with the things that I'm interested in?" I was mentioning some writers and talking about, "I can talk to so and so…" She asked, "Don't you want to do it?" And she's really cute! But I was like, "No, I really don't. But think about how I can help you with it." And then I came up with the idea and thought, "Ahh! My precious, my precious!" And when I came up with the idea, there was no convincing. I was done. Then, I still was only going to write [the pilot] and then make a movie and oversee it. FOX heard the idea and said, "Make seven [episodes]," like in a heartbeat. They said, "Make seven of them." And that vote of confidence and that show of support I haven't seen a lot of in the movie industry.

Question: Would you say TV is still the kinder medium to writers?

Whedon: Yes it is. It absolutely is. I love movies though, I do. They're part of my DNA.

Question: Do you have this close a friendship with a lot of the actors you've worked with, or do you think you and Eliza have something very specific?

Whedon: You know, it's different with everyone. Eliza and I aren't as close as some, like Aly [Hannigan] and Amy [Acker]. They're in my life day to day. I'm really close with Alexis Denisof. Eliza and I have seldom been in the same place for very long and I'm an old married guy and she's a lot younger and bubblier. But we started this tradition, and it started years ago, where I got frustrated with all these crappy horror movies she was making like Wrong Turn and Soul Survivor… That last one broke me. I literally said, "Eliza, let's have tea. I'd like to talk to you." And I said, "I love you. I think you have something that no other actor that I've worked with has. What the f**k are you making these movies for? Why are you doing this to me? You're killing me. I just think you're better than this." And that was when she was really struggling with her agency and her identity and not really knowing what she wanted, but she knew she wanted to. And it kind of became a tradition with us over the years. I saw her in New York doing a play off-Broadway and we sat until 2:00 in the morning talking about, "There's this opportunity, and I'm trying to develop this." I could see that she was taking it further. And this lunch was just one of those [situations]. We always checked in with each other with this, 'Same time next year' relationship. We hardly get to see each other and when we do, I adore her and I'm pretty sure she's fairly okay with me.

Question: Your fans are very protective of you. Some of them heard "midseason" and there was a bit of, "The sky is falling! FOX is going to screw him again!" What do you say to those concerns?

Whedon: Well, you know, I get it. I understand that and I feel bad because I want to be able to explain, without sounding like an apologist, that it doesn't work the way it used to. The winter is prime time for FOX. Firefly came out in the fall, had to fight baseball, and lost. FOX has always been incredibly supportive of [Dollhouse], and they also said, "Well, you haven't finished it. These guys [at Fringe] have finished theirs." And we were gunning for winter. We were like, "We hope we get January, because we want American Idol time, not baseball time." Not to say that they're not supporting Fringe, it's just that either one works for different reasons. I like the idea of making my episodes before they go out – it's how we did Buffy and it worked great for us. But yeah, for some people it has the stink of midseason, when in fact the whole concept of the season is deteriorating. So we're going up with the premiere of 24.

Question: I know you're a big Battlestar fan. Was it great for you to get to work with Tahmoh Penikett?

Whedon: I'm gonna go out on a limb here and tell the truth – I've had a man-crush on Tahmoh since the first episode of Battlestar.

Question: From the moment he stayed behind on Caprica?

Whedon: I had a feeling about him. I just had a feeling about him. I know, he gave up his seat to Baltar! Not bright, but cute! But no, he just has a presence. Tim Minear watched the dailies and he said, "I can't believe you found this guy. This guy is so hard to find. A leading man that has a real soulfulness and a real unique quality" and I just felt that from Battlestar, and he brought it completely [to Dollhouse]. When I spoke to him, he was the first person to mention Never Let Me Go, the novel, just from hearing the premise of Dollhouse. The beautiful sadness of that novel so suffuses what we're trying to do, and it was so beautiful when he brought it up that I just knew this guy [was right]. And it follows my rule with Nathan [Fillion]. Hire a Canadian! They're gentlemen and they're very tall.

Question: Was that book in your mind when you were coming up with Dollhouse?

Whedon: I'd read it, but I hadn't thought about it when I was making Dollhouse. But then I went, "Oh, there are real parallels and real emotional kind of similarities."

Question: Can you talk about Amy Acker's character?

Whedon: Amy plays Dr. Claire Saunders. She works in the Dollhouse and she's a very moral force and she's very, very, very broken. She's scarred. Something happened – she's literally scarred. Something happened at the dollhouse awhile back and she was scarred and she just sort of lives there and her whole mission in life is to take care of them. Topher, the programmer, he programs them and has a very amoral kind of point of view, and she's sort of his counterpoint.

Question: What exactly are the dolls used for? In the clips, one guy seems to be using Eliza for a date essentially, right?

Whedon: Well, they will. One of the things Eliza first talked to me about is the idea of sexuality being something she wanted to explore before I'd come up with a concept. And the idea of hiring what we refer to as "an active" – the dolls, basically – is that you get to have the perfect experience. And if we are going to stand here and say for as lot of people the perfect experience doesn't involve sex, that would be disingenuous. So, there is an element of something about it that's very romantic and there's an element that's very creepy. And the two things, what's interesting to me, is that they're joined. That need for that perfect moment – feeling love for somebody that's simple and real and not something where they're faking, because they're not. She'll fall in love with him. That's how it works. Whether or not it has to do with sex, that's how it works. That's how she's imprinted. But our need for something like that is sort of what's worst about us and what's best about us. What she ends up being in most cases is kind of a life coach; whether she's coaching you through a criminal act or going into rehab, she's the person you need to meet the most at that time and combining a very lofty sort of goal with what is considered by most people to be a very base part of us, sexuality, is what interests me, because there's arguments for every side. There is arguments that that is degrading and there's arguments that it's uplifting and there's arguments in different ways for both of those sides and that's what we want to talk about.

Question: If you do six years of this show, do you know the end?

Whedon: I don't know the end zone, because you've got to leave that up to the viewers to an extent, but I know the arenas. When I pitched the show, I said, "Here's the pilot, here are the characters, here's episode six and sort of what we do every week and here's the first two years, second two years, third two years." So yes, because the show has to progress. Especially a show like this, where while it's a week to week show – she'll go on a different engagement every week and it'll have a complete story – like Buffy, ultimately what people will become invested in is the arcs of the characters. You cannot just hit reset. Somebody, I forget who and I apologize to them in advance, but somebody said, "Scully was pretty much like a doll that they imprinted and she kept forgetting that there might be monsters." You can't do that. You have to let them grow. So I said, "The first arc is this, the second arc is this, the third is this." There's room for change though, but they know I have a five year plan and that's important.

Question: So people can hire the dolls for anything?

Whedon: As long as the doll is not in any danger. People are background checked and vetted very, very seriously and nobody who might harm a doll is allowed in.

Question: So this is a profitable operation?

Whedon: Yes. But where the money is going is something we haven't talked about.

Question: The early impression was that it was more of a secret agent thing; like they were assassins. Is that part of it?

Whedon: Well, she's not never gonna tote a piece, but that's not what the show is. People thought it was like an Alias thing. The two things we have to disabuse people of is one, she's not toting a gun every week. That's not what it's about. It's a human drama with some action and there's always suspense, because as she becomes self-aware, the dollhouse becomes kind of a dangerous place for her. So there's always that friction. But it could be a romantic comedy one week. Eliza jokes that this is a cure for her ADHD. I say it's a cure for mine.

Question: It had been four years since you directed Serenity. What was it like filming the pilot?

Whedon: Well, it's been awhile, apart from shooting The Office. I also shot Dr. Horrible. I tell you what was different – shooting The Office and then shooting Dr. Horrible, I scouted locations that were really tiny and I forgot… I haven't had a wall that flies since I can remember. So I was like, "You know, I probably should have scouted bigger locations! This is awkward."

Question: What do you make of this whole "Remote-Free" concept? You have to do another few minutes of your show, and then afterwards, for repeats, presumably cut a few minutes.

Whedon: That's a good point! They didn't bring up the repeats. But you know, we've always had to cut out a couple of minutes of a show for repeats. That's always been the way. But I don't really deal with that that much. But they've also said, "We want longer versions for the DVD." Ultimately, I tend to shoot long. Our shows tend to go long. Some come in short – it will happen. But generally they go long. So this just means a little less heartache in the editing room. But we also have to make sure that when we cut a show down to 40 minutes, you make it the best 40 minutes. So we're not going to be like The Office and shoot way too much, but yeah, we're going to have a production issue about shooting just a little bit more, because even if I love it at 46 minutes, there's a chance it could be tighter. But I never want to vamp. You're not gonna get a bloated first cut – you're gonna get a 46 minute story.

Dollhouse Fans Campaign To Save Show — Before 2009 Airdate

Yep, some Josh Whedon faithful are staging a preemptive strike, fearing the worst and that the show will be cancelled like Firefly. An enterprising Canadian, Nathan, the administrator of dollhouseforums.com is launching the campaign. From a post on his site:

“After seeing some of my favorite television shows get cancelled in the past — as well as the “save this show” campaigns that followed — I had the idea that a fan campaign BEFORE the show begins may be the best thing to do. Maybe not such a negative campaign directed towards saving it from getting cancelled, but something that will get fans motivated to promote Dollhouse to friends/family/coworkers before it airs is smarter than doing it once it’s in danger! If we plan now, we may be able to have several ideas planned by the premiere to make people watch and make advertisers actually want the show on the air.”

While I do applaud the initiative, I’m inclined to agree with a few of the comments left on Nathan’s site that it may be a double-edged sword. One thing doing TVbytheNumbers has taught me is that fans are indeed leery of investing time in shows they fear will be cancelled, Highlighting the risk could potentially work against the show.
