Dollhouse - Comic-Con Report

Dollhouse was an interesting panel to work out. I really wanted to cover this panel, but I was in Hall H for the first part of the morning, with the hugely-popular Lost panel ending at 1 PM, Dollhouse starting at 1 PM in Ballroom 20. There was no way in hell I was going to make it out of Lost and get into Dollhouse without help, and Rich was scheduled to attend the Office writers panel.

So, we decided he'd instead stay in Ballroom 20 through Futurama and Simpsons, then Dean Koontz (why that panel was shoehorned in between Simpsons and Dollhouse will forever be a mystery to me). Once I was outside the exit, I texted Rich that I could take over and I tagged him out of the room and there I remained for the rest of the day. Unfortunately for me I missed the show's trailer, but Rich said there was nothing new there.

In attendance of this panel: Joss Whedon, Eliza Dushku and Tahmoh Penikett.

- Joss moderated the panel. I felt sorta bad for him, as he looked like it was hot as hades up on that stage. He's definitely comfortable being up there, though, and he was as funny as you'd expect.

- Within the show, Paul Smith (Penikett) will have a difficult time tracking down Echo (Dushku), as every time he gets closer, Echo is someone else.

- Joss was asked by an attendee what he thought about websites already being formed to save the show, even before it's aired. This got a big laugh out of everyone, and his answer is something I want to post about on its own later -- it was the theme of many discussions I had throughout the weekend.

- Everyone was asked what their favorite Buffy moment was. Eliza said hers was every time she'd be dancing and then killing five things at the same time. Joss's favorite moment was when Faith said to Angel: "Kill me, I'm bad." in the alley. To that Dushku laughed and said, "you're so full of it."

- Eliza talked about how great it is to come back working with Joss, calling him her "career brazier." He's just waiting for that shirt to be made.

- An attendee asked Joss about his habit of bringing back people he's worked with in the past, to which he said, like most things, when something's worked before you tend to go back with it. He then was asked if he'd bring Nathan Fillion into Dollhouse, and Eliza said, "a Nathan/Tahmoh sandwhich!" Joss said that he loves working with everyone, and even Amy Acker will be on Dollhouse, but he doesn't want to start this "party at Joss's house" thing.

- Joss said he likes to think of Dollhouse as having the feel of the movie Collateral in the way the city is portrayed.

- An attendee asked Dushku: "does your spine glow?" (A BSG reference), and Tahmoh replied: "Not yet."

- As for the re-shooting of the pilot, which was not really a re-shooting so much as a new episode was created to come before the originally created episode. Joss said this was his idea, as it will give the "real" first episode more resonance. He said not to worry, that another fiasco like Firefly with its out-of-order episodes is not going to happen.

- Joss said he sees no promise it Dollhouse coming to comic-book form.

- Joss was asked what he thought of how his work is studied in college courses now. "It's a huge honor," he said.

- There are 13 episodes greenlit for Dollhouse, and there are plans to have them accompanied by webisodes.

As I said above, there's more I want to talk about with regards to one answer Joss gave, and it's supplemented by a quick 1-on-1 talk I had with him later that night. More to come.
